The wedding of Andrew and Melanie

History

The first reference to a church in Stockton is during the reign of Henry I, between 1100 and 1135 (AD, not AM). Rob de Limesi founded it, however the right to appoint the parish priest passed through several families until 1824 when New College, Oxford bought it. The College is still the parish's patron and has a say in the appointment of any priest in Stockton.

The original church was probably built of wood, but burnt down. In 1530 a new church starting to be built and parts still remain today.

The remaining alterations to the church, which result in what we see today, began in 1809. Today the majority of St. Michael's is built from brown and red sandstone.
